What makes a good physiotherapist?

Our physiotherapist, Slava Blokhin, believes that three things make a good physiotherapist:

  • Personalized Approach
We use a personalized approach based on your health goals to improve your function and reduce pain. Treatment is tailored to each person individually. Treatment may involve a combination of manual therapy (hands-on), education about your condition and exercise prescription to provide a long-term solution to your problems.
  • Clear Communication
When the patient is clear about the treatment plan, healing is expedited. At the end of your assessment, you will receive a treatment plan that outlines your rehab journey to have a clear understanding of the process.
  • Outside Office Support
Patients are welcome to email the clinic with questions in between sessions. That level of support is available even after the treatment program is finished.

When Should I See a Physiotherapist?

You should see a physiotherapist if:

  1. You incur an injury
  2. You are experiencing pain for 2 weeks or more without improvement
  3. Your pain prevents you from moving well

For example, when you’re unable to:

  • Play with your children
  • Workout the way you want
  • Perform your work duties due to pain or functional limitation

Conditions Treated With North York Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy care can provide relief from many of today’s most common health problems, including:

  • Neck muscle stiffness
  • SI joint dysfunction (lower back issues)
  • Lower back disk issues
  • Rotator cuff tendinopathy (shoulder injuries)
  • Tennis elbow
  • Hip Impingement
  • Patellar tendinopathy (knee issues)
  • Hip and knee arthritis
  • Ankle sprains & Plantar fasciitis
  • Neuropathies (nerve issues)

What is the Difference Between a Chiropractor and a Physiotherapist?

North York Physiotherapist

The two disciplines are fairly similar in nature. However, the primary focus of Physiotherapy is pain-free movement and optimized function of the body. The primary focus of Chiropractic care is pain relief and addressing the misalignment of the spine.

Chiropractors perform manipulations and adjustments of the joints and spine while Physiotherapists focus on manual therapy techniques, mobilization techniques and rehabilitation exercises.

Examples of Physiotherapy modalities we practice:

  • Manual Therapy – hands-on, soft tissue massage
  • Exercises – Stretches, lunges, spine mobility, etc.
  • Education – How you should or shouldn’t be moving, what to do when you are in pain, etc.

When Is It Better To See a Physio Instead of a Chiro?

When the pain is muscular, joint or bones related, you should see a Physiotherapist.

Muscular Pain Examples

Pain in your shoulder after lifting something heavy or when you wake up with a pinch in your neck. Tennis elbow issues are also muscular in nature.

Joint Pain Examples

When you come up from sitting or prolonged walking and feel knee pain, that’s a joint problem. Anytime you sprain your ankle, that’s a joint issue as well.

Bone Pain Examples

Anytime you fracture your wrist or hip, that’s a bone problem. When you experience extreme tenderness or aching in one or more bones.

No. You do not need a referral to work with a Physiotherapist. However, check your Extended Health Benefits insurance because some insurance companies require a referral for purposes of reimbursement.

Yes, it is possible to achieve 100% recovery. Your body is very adaptable to change and it is designed to heal. Pain means that the patterns of your body are not functioning properly and need to be corrected.

It depends on the severity of the problem, how long it has persisted for and the current condition of your body. Issues that have been persistent in your body for a long time may take longer to heal. But, the bottom line is – you CAN get better!  The longer you wait, the longer it would take to achieve full recovery. As an agent of your health, you are in control.

Seek help as soon as your body is not functioning optimally.

Generally, it is true if all of the conditions between a younger and an older person are kept the same, except for age. However, it greatly depends on the injury and the functional state of the muscles and joints of the specific person.

For example, take a knee injury due to running:

  • A 20-year-old will be able to recruit their muscles faster and resume running more quickly.
  • A 60-year-old will take longer to resume running because of compensations of muscles that occurred over many years.

But in general, the message is – you CAN heal, you CAN get better. You CAN live pain-free! The age and the state don’t matter.

The first assessment will determine the severity of the injury. Based on that assessment, the number of sessions will be outlined in the treatment plan. You will get a photocopy of the treatment plan to keep.

Physiotherapy definitely works but the communication has to be clear between the Physiotherapist and the patient as to the expectations of the treatment plan.

Some injuries take longer to heal and some can recover much faster. Your treatment plan is also based on the goals that you would like to achieve.

You will know that your condition is moving in the right direction as the frequency and intensity of pain are decreasing and you are able to do more activities in your daily life.

There are options for 30 minutes, 45 minutes and 60 minutes appointments. The length of sessions will be determined on the first visit as well.

You can do the following to prepare for the first Physiotherapy appointment:

  1. Wear comfortable clothing to be able to move around
  2. Arrive 10-15 minutes prior to your appointment to fill out the necessary paperwork. Alternatively, you can acquire these forms prior to the appointment and complete them at home.
  3. Understand how much time you have available for Physiotherapy to make the process of booking further sessions easier
  1. People who have an injury
  2. People who have ongoing pain that is not getting better
  3. People who have issues with alignment and imbalances in their body
