With the delayed snowfall it seemed as if most of us were caught off guard with the first big storm. Shoveling can be a pain and stressor on the body but most people don’t know that being cramped up in your car with all that snowstorm traffic can take quite the toll as well.
First thing in the morning we may not get all that car scraping done right or the de-fog may not allow for perfectly clear vision on the road. Scenarios like these lead to slouching shoulders, straining necks and twisting backs in order to gain clearer vision of the road but also cause detriment to the body. Over and over again this may continue until the spring and by then muscles will be tenser than before.
Most low back pain is acute or short term, and lasts a few days to a few weeks. The majority of acute low back pain is mechanical in nature, meaning that there is a disruption in the way the components of the back (the spine, muscle, intervertebral discs, and nerves) fit together and move. Untreated pain creates a downward spiral of chronic pain symptoms, so it is always best to treat pain early and avoid chronic pain. Saving yourself from neck and back pain later on may make it more worth it to take the extra time to scrape that last bit of ice or to make sure you have clear vision in your car before getting on the road. If this is not possible try to stretch before and after getting in the car to alleviate the tension.
Getting a chiropractic adjustment every few weeks or even half an hour of massage therapy is beneficial to loosen up the built up tension or pain and prevent greater detriment down.
Along with these treatments doing some moderate exercise is beneficial for strengthening joints and completes the triad for optimal joint health to prepare you for getting back on the road!
