Chiropractic Therapy

We get your spine moving without drugs or surgery.

The Chiropractor at Madison Clinic in North York applies hands-on therapy to encourage your body to heal itself and treat the cause of the problem, not just the symptoms.

North York Chiropractic Therapy

Chiropractors diagnose and perform manipulative therapy to treat neuro-musculoskeletal problems (nerves, muscles, bones) caused by areas of the spine that have stopped moving.

We treat joint fixations (know as Spinal Subluxations) by gentle spinal manipulation and mobilization. Spinal subluxations are dysfunctional spinal segments that are fixated (not moving) and arise from the skeletal system’s stressors. The effectiveness of chiropractic therapy is well supported by scientific research.

What Makes A Good Chiropractor?

A good Chiropractor will pay attention to you as a whole person, not only the symptom exhibited.

Dr. Michael Rodney, our clinic’s North York Chiropractor, has been in practice for 20+ years and is masterful at ‘reading’ people. Your body language, facial expressions, tone of voice, mood, etc. – all matter to Dr. Rodney when it comes to helping you relax during the treatments.  A relaxed patient will get better results.

Working with us, you’ll get the highest level of care.

When Should I See a Chiropractor?

A Chiropractor’s job is to help you achieve your optimal functional level, improve your athletic performance, or get you out of pain. Pain happens to be the biggest driver because it is immediate, emotional and debilitating.

We’ve treated patients who couldn’t:

  • Get up in the morning
  • Walk or jog
  • Sit or stand
  • Play with their kids
  • Go to the washroom
  • Make love to their spouse
  • Engage in a favourite sport

If you experience pain and discomfort, see a chiropractor.

What is the difference between a Chiropractor and a Physiotherapist?

The short answer is that without additional FCampT certification, physiotherapists aren’t trained on High-Velocity Low Amplitude (HVLA) manipulations of the spine. This may allow the Chiropractor to isolate the spinal segments that need to be moved in the complexity of the multilevel spinal column more accurately. Chiropractors are trained to manipulate the spine and limbs.

A physiotherapist is trained to use mobilization techniques and rehabilitative exercises. We have an excellent Physiotherapist on staff that we regularly refer people to when needed. A good Physiotherapist and a good Chiropractor are equally able to rehabilitate an injury or enhance athletic performance.

Why Do Athletes Need A Chiropractor?

Athletes tend to focus on wellness and often:

  • think their body is invincible
  • don’t think of the long term effects of their injury
  • are hyper-focused on the sport and wait too long before asking for help

Did you know horses often get Chiropractic treatments before a big race? That’s because they have a spine too. If their spine isn’t moving correctly, it slows them down, which could cost them the race. By freeing up their joints, they move faster, which can lead to the win. Athletes aren’t that different from racehorses… They also need a spine that is free of restrictions for the win

Many of our athletic patients partner with us to help them perform at their peak. If you’re an athlete, a Chiropractor may just be your best friend.

What Our Chiropractic Patients Say

Find out why we have 250+ reviews with 5-star rating

I wish I could give more stars on this review. Dr. Rodney is very knowledgable and highly skilled. I had some discomfort on my neck and upper back. Dr. Rodney really took his time to diagnose my problem and after a few treatments the pain and discomfort were gone. If you’re looking to get chiropractic treatment, Dr. Rodney is the one you should see.

Roy Kim

I visited the clinic for the first time due to severe neck, shoulder and upper back pain. Dr. Rodney came to my rescue and after just two visits, alleviated most pain and provided much needed relief. Dr. Rodney is incredibly friendly, energetic, professional, knowledgeable and genuinely cares about his patients. So glad to have found myself a Chiropractor for life! For anyone looking for a highly experienced Chiropractor, I recommend Dr. Rodney. Many thanks Doc.

Pamela Atuheire

Dr Rodney and his team are the best. They are my first choice for chiropractic and massage therapy. They take the time and care to ensure your medical concerns are addressed and work on a treatment plan that has always helped me go back to feeling well again.

Marie Nicholson

Great experience, just started with Dr. Rodney a month ago, much different than most chiropractors I’ve been to. Takes the time to find problems to solve, not just blanket advice and treatments.. highly recommend!

Alex M

I initially attended Madison Clinic for a lower back injury because they were able to handle WSIB claims. Dr. Michael Rodney is one of the best chiropractors I have ever encountered. He’s knowledgeable, experienced, and genuinely cares about the patient. I can safely say that my back pain is gone and I plan on having subsequent appointments to keep it that way. In addition, the staff there is friendly, professional, and well prepared with safety measures during this pandemic. Highly recommend!

Frequent Questions

During the first visit with the Chiropractor, you can expect:

  • A thorough Chiropractic exam that consists of: a history of your concerns, a physical exam, a diagnosis, a plan of treatment and a prognosis
  • The option to receive your first treatment
  • Please plan for 45 minutes (or more)

For more information about your first visit, please refer to the ‘Your First Visit’ page.

Pinched nerves could result from:

  • a decrease in space where the nerve exits the spine (degenerative disc disease or DDD)
  • a disc herniation that compresses the nerve, or
  • a muscle that pushes on or traps the nerve.

In most cases, Chiropractors are successful in reducing, controlling or even eliminating the pinched nerve. Sometimes, it takes a bit of time and patience and a lot of effort on both sides (you have to do the prescribed exercises), but the partnership often leads to good results.

  • If you are suffering from a potentially life-threatening emergency, such as a stroke or a heart attack, you should call 911 and go to the hospital as quickly as possible.
  • Otherwise, a Chiropractor is a doctor and has spent four years in Chiropractic College, which includes an internship (after doing a minimum of 3 years of undergrad) and is well trained to determine what they should and should not treat. You should feel safe and comfortable going to the Chiropractor and allowing them to tell you what they can help you with. They are trained to refer you out if they deem it to be best for the patient.

In short, NO. In the body’s normal physiology, the neck can withstand quite a lot of torque and pressure. The neck adjustment, when appropriately delivered, should be pretty gentle and would never jeopardize the integrity of the bony matrix. The only time that this would be even slightly conceivable is if a person presented with severe osteoporosis or another significant abnormal metabolic process that rendered the bones extremely weak. In that case, most other day-to-day activities would lead to fractures. Remember that Chiropractors are trained to ask questions that should rule out unsuitable treatments. A Chiropractor can choose to mobilize (move the spinal segment within its normal range) instead of adjusting (move the spinal segment into the para-physiological range).

Just like when you work out for the first time in a long time, you may feel some soreness from moving things that have not moved in a long time. A Chiropractic treatment isn’t that different. A Chiropractor will attempt to find segments of your spine that have not moved in a long time and move them, which may result in soreness. Soreness may also occur if the Chiropractor is working on your body’s inflamed areas as they are probably more sensitive and can react to therapy initially. It is very likely in either case that the pain will go away within a few days.

You should never do anything that makes you uncomfortable. The Chiropractor may ask you to wear clothes that make the examination and treatment easier to perform. You should wear (or bring) comfortable clothes and allow for movement (shorts and a T-shirt are ideal). Suits, tight clothing that is rigid and especially skirts are not recommended.

  • It would be best if the patient sees the Registered Massage Therapist first so that the muscles are relaxed in an ideal world. That way, the Chiropractor can use less force when administering the spine’s adjustment, leading to less tenderness after the treatment.

Unfortunately, sometimes this sequence is not available, and that is perfectly fine. Often the Chiropractor will use heat or an IFC/TENS unit to achieve the same effect.

First off, Medical Doctors, for the most part, do not hate all Chiropractors. There are good and bad in every profession. There was less scientific literature supporting Chiropractic in the earlier days of the profession. Luckily for us, some brilliant Chiropractors and Allied Health Professionals have done an excellent job of providing research that supports the efficacy of our treatments. There are now treatment protocols, supported by science, for most areas of the body that our associations encourage . Like all professions, Chiropractic is evolving based on research.

Endorphins are released when your joints are “adjusted,” not “cracked.” Those endorphins inhibit pain which makes you feel better immediately, but that relief is often short-lived.  The longer-lasting benefits of spinal manipulation are derived from moving those restricted spinal segments and getting them moving more normally.

Everyone who comes to see a Chiropractor is unique/different, and consequently, everyone will have a recommended treatment frequency based on their situation and needs.

No, you cannot get physiologically addicted to a Chiropractor. After receiving treatment from a Chiropractor, you will likely feel better with less pain and improved spine movement. You may feel better than you have felt in years. When you go back to doing the things that caused the problems initially, such as sitting for hours in front of a computer, slouching, or otherwise, you may lose those advantages that you obtained from the treatments and feel the desire to go back to the Chiropractor again. That is an awareness of what your body is capable of feeling and not an addiction.
