Natural Relief for Sciatic Pain

For gentle, natural relief from sciatic pain, chiropractic tops almost every list… and for good reason! Studies have demonstrated its effectivity on sciatic symptoms, and unlike medications or surgeries, there are no side effects. Chiropractic care may help you find relief in the long run, especially if you keep up with it, but what can you do about it right now?

As you continue working with your chiropractor, here are some things you can do in the meantime that may help you temporarily squash the pain.

Here are some to try out:

Heat and Cold Therapies

Utilized correctly, heat and cold therapies can be very useful for many types of pain, including sciatica. When to use which depends on what kind of pain is being experienced. Heat can help with dull pain, loosen tight muscles and increase circulation—perfect for aches and pains. Others prefer ice, which restricts blood flow and reduces inflammation, swelling and spasms. You can also choose to alternate if need be (3mins hot:1 min cold x5 – end with cold).

Epsom Salt Soaks

Epsom salt baths are known for having restorative properties—they help draw toxins out of the body and relax the nervous system. In combination with warm water, increasing circulation and reducing inflammation, the two work together for a relaxing experience that many find beneficial for sciatic pain.

Acupuncture

In a study on acupuncture and sciatica, a test group of patients exposed to warming acupuncture found relief from sciatic symptoms because the therapy helped increase their pain threshold. They showed significant improvement when compared to two other test groups exposed to medication.

Stretching and Yoga

When it comes to sciatica and exercise, avoid the strenuous; you need to take it easy. However, inactivity can be equally as damaging, not just for your condition but your whole body. Stretching and yoga both lengthen the spine and work on posture while reducing inflammation, helping stiffness and strengthening. Plus, studies show that it’s safe and effective for those with sciatica!
